Residents of Carmunnock have worked together to decorate their village in poppies as a homemade tribute to their war heroes.

The village has been covered with over 9000 hand-knitted poppies to commemorate those who fought and died during the First World War.

Carolyn Hatfield, the organiser of the colourful display, told STV News that the initial response to the poppies was so positive in the village that the decision was quickly taken to expand the project.

She said: "We originally were only going to do the war memorial and the side of the church but we got such a fantastic response that we said right we'll do the railings we'll add this on and add that on."

Carolyn came up with the idea after visiting a town in North Yorkshire that had a similar display and thought it was a fitting tribute to local residents who gave their lives during the conflict.

She said that the community has embraced the project and are working around the clock to develop it as much as possible.

"Everybody in the village came together and they've all got lots of different roles, so as much as I've came up with the idea, hundreds of different people developed the idea after that."
