Travel chaos is being caused ahead of Scotland's League Cup semi-final, leaving hundreds of football fans stranded.

Huge delays have been caused at Glasgow Queen Street and Motherwell due to overcrowded trains.

Fans going to the Hearts v Celtic tie at Murrayfield, Edinburgh, are being turned away as trains are full.

One described the situation as "disgraceful" while another the queues were "shambolic".

On Twitter, Andrew McGlone said: "People with pre-paid tickets were being told to go to Glasgow as the train wasn't letting anyone on at Motherwell due to being full. Extra carriages? No chance!

"There will be so many people cutting it fine or even missing the game due to this."

Another tweet posted said: "I would advise any Celtic fan going on a train from Queen Street to Edinburgh to leave from Central instead.

"Absolutely shambolic queues of 1000's.

"Why is there not trains every 15 minutes instead of half hourly?"

A fan added: "Train services proving to be a shambles as expected.

"Fans shafted. Sympathise with those who'll miss out due to overcrowded trains."

Another said: "Lots of fans looking for alternative travel in Glasgow as trains full and no way of getting later one's as game will be started."

ScotRail said extra carriages would be added to trains to help fans get to and from the stadium, warning travel would be much busier than normal.

A company spokesman said: "We have extra trains and additional services in place throughout the day to help supporters travel to both semi-finals, but given the numbers involved services are very busy.

"We are doing everything we can to get our customers where they need to be."
