A cancer patient stranded on an island in the Indian Ocean after becoming unwell has died.

Jon Paul McAllister, 38, and his partner Craig Park went on holiday to South Africa, Madagascar and the Seychelles to celebrate the end of Mr McAllister's chemotherapy treatment and their January engagement.

But in Madagascar, Mr McAllister's health deteriorated rapidly, leaving him too unwell to return home on a commercial flight

Friends started a fundraising campaign to pay for the overseas treatment and an air ambulance flight back to Scotland, which they said the couple's insurance would not pay out for.

The fundraising page has now announced that he has passed away.

It said: "It's with heavy hearts that we share the sad news that our very special Jon Paul passed away yesterday on Reunion Island.

"He slipped away peacefully with his rock and best pal, Craig, by his side.

"Jon Paul fought so hard against this awful illness for nine long months and now he's at peace.

"He was a legend that will live on forever in our memories and in our hearts.

"We were so close to getting JP home. A medical repatriation service had been organised to fly him home on Saturday before his health rapidly deteriorated.

"Unfortunately, this was a non-refundable cost."

The fundraising page had reached more than £25,000 to help bring Mr McAllister back to Scotland.

Organisers of the page say the money will now go to returning his body to Scotland and covering outstanding medical costs.

"Jon Paul and all his loved ones have been completely overwhelmed and touched by the generosity and support of everyone and cannot thank you all enough," they said.

"We are now doing everything we can to bring JP home for that Scottish send off he deserves.

"Any further donations to help with this and the vast medical costs that have unfortunately been incurred, would be greatly appreciated by us all."
