Plans for a 'street in the sky' bridge over the M8 have been unveiled.

The new pedestrian and cycle bridge would connect Sighthill and communities in north Glasgow to the city centre.

Glasgow City Council want to replace the current bridge with the 'street in the sky', which would need minimal maintenance and minimise disruption to the motorway below.

The 191ft bridge will be a landmark project in the £250m Sighthill Transformational Regeneration Area - the biggest such scheme in the UK outside of London.

Landscaping on both sides would create new civic spaces and a paved brick deck would be shaped like an hourglass.

The contract for the creation of the bridge is hoped to be awarded by spring 2019, with construction taking place later that year.

It is expected the project would be completed by Summer 2020.

Councillor Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council said: "This new bridge will form a gateway to both Sighthill and the city centre.

"For far too long, neighbourhoods just on the periphery of the city centre have been forgotten or abandoned.

"Sighthill has typified this neglect, cut off from the heart of the city by the M8. But its regeneration will deliver a new neighbourhood within a short walking or cycling distance from the city centre, creating new communities along the Canal Corridor and delivering for the people and economy in the north of Glasgow.

"If we are serious about building sustainable, balanced and inclusive communities we need to expand how we think of the city centre, to incorporate those communities on its fringes.

"The new bridge will be more than just a crossing over the M8 - it will be an emblem of the new Sighthill, connecting it into wider city life and helping revitalise North Glasgow."
