Employees could be charged to park cars at their work under new council plans.

Glasgow City Council wants to introduce the scheme in a bid to reduce emission levels.

The proposals could see employees paying a monthly fee to use company car parks.

A similar scheme has already been introduced in Nottingham, where employers with more than 11 parking places are charged £402 per year.

It is then up to the company on how it chooses to pay for the spaces, with some opting to charge their workers a monthly fee.

A council report to be discussed on Tuesday states millions of pounds could be generated from the scheme.

It says: "The potential advantages to introducing a Workplace Parking Levy (WPL) would be to encourage a modal shift towards more sustainable and active travel options and reduce congestion caused by single occupancy private car trips.

"A WPL scheme would also complement the low emission zone, the first phase of which comes into force in Glasgow at the end of 2018, in terms of reducing harmful traffic emissions.

"A WPL scheme could also provide a funding stream for major transport improvement schemes.

"An example of this is in Nottingham, where WPL funds have been used as a contribution towards major sustainable transport improvements including electric buses and extensions to the tram network.

"The scheme in Nottingham has generated around £25m in its first three years of operation."
