The discovery was made in Greenhall Park in High Blantyre, shortly before 8pm on Monday.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze before a body was discovered in the vehicle.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "At around 7.55pm on Monday, police were called to a report of a car on fire in Greenahll Park.
"The fire was extinguished and a body was found within the vehicle.
"Extensive police inquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the person in the vehicle and the circumstances surrounding this incident.
"A post-mortem will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of death.
"In the meantime, the death is being treated as unexplained."
