A plasterer has been jailed for life after murdering a dad-of-three in a row over broken windows.

Daniel McCafferty, 33, mowed Steven Campbell down at 2am and dragged him under a white van for almost half a mile.

On Wednesday, the High Court in Glasgow heard that McCafferty drove off leaving Mr Campbell's body lying in a South Lanarkshire road.

McCafferty later sent a message to a friend admitting that he was "going to jail for ages" and was going to "waste a pure chunk of life" because of the incident.

McCafferty sent another message, saying: "Just annoyed I got forced into this. I won, but."

The court heard McCafferty was angry because his windows had been smashed that night. He suspected Mr Campbell, 27, and when he saw him walking along the road drove at him in his transit van.

McCafferty has now been ordered to serve at least 18 years behind bars.

Lord Clark told McCafferty: "A motor vehicle was a brutal means of attack. Mr Campbell's family has suffered a terrible loss, which you have caused, for the rest of their lives."

Defence QC Tony Graham said that McCafferty was remorseful and had offered to plead guilty to the lesser charge of culpable homicide.

McCafferty claimed that Mr Campbell, who had been drinking, stumbled and fell and he did not see him.

However, he was convicted of the murder, which occurred in Toryglen Road, Rutherglen, on June 2 last year.
