Police are investigating after a man was shot at his home in Ayrshire.

The 46-year-old was taken to hospital after the incident in a rural property just outside Kilmarnock.

Medics believe he was shot in the upper body.

There was a high police presence in the area following the incident that took place at around 1.50pm on Monday.

Officers were still guarding a lane near the property on Tuesday night.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police are investigating after a 46-year-old man was found injured at around 1.50pm on Monday.

"Emergency services attended and the victim was taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital to be treated for injuries thought to have been caused by a firearm.

"Enquiries are at an early stage to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and anyone with information is asked to contact Kilmarnock CID via 101."
