A teenage girl was left with a bloodied face after she was attacked by two women at a country park in North Lanarkshire.

Caitlin Shepherd, 19, was dragged out of her car and assaulted while out driving with her friends in Strathclyde Country Park, Motherwell, on Sunday night.

Following the assault, she posted graphic images of her injuries onto Facebook and described her "horrible" ordeal.

Miss Shepherd said the women, who were revving their engine in a car close behind, attacked after she pulled into a parking space at the park.

She also said she was hauled from her seat and hit on the face with a "heavy" implement after refusing to get out of her car.

Miss Shepherd said one of the attackers threatened to stab her, adding: "One had something in her hand which was quite heavy and repeatedly hit it into my face, which has obviously burst all my face open and got blood all over my car."

She added: "It was honestly horrible."

Miss Shepherd said the attackers drove off in their vehicle.

The pictures the teenager posted on social media showed blood pouring from her nose and mouth following the attack.

One image also showed her jeans soaked in blood.

Miss Shepherd thanked all those who have sent messages of support and highlighted that her friends in the car attempted to stop the attack.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the assault.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "At around 10.10pm on Sunday, March 17, police received a report of a 19-year-old girl having been assaulted in a car park at Strathclyde Country Park, Motherwell, earlier that evening.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
