Police are treating a gas explosion at a flat in Glasgow as attempted murder.

A 26-year-old man is currently fighting for his life at Glasgow Royal Infirmary following the blast in Kennedar Drive, which happened at around 7.05am on Friday.

A 30-year-old woman was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment to minor injuries. She has since been discharged.

STV News understands that police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Superintendent Craig Smith said: "Enquiries carried out so far have revealed that the explosion was as a result of a deliberate act within the flat.

"The flat has been significantly damaged, however, the impact of the blast did not affect other properties in the block and the 23 people who had been evacuated have been allowed back into their homes.

"Kennedar Drive remains closed to vehicular traffic until further notice."

Firefighters assisted in the rescue and passed the casualties onto the Scottish Ambulance Service, which sent its special operation team, a trauma unit, two ambulances and a manager.

Residents were evacuated from the area while investigation and clean-up works took place.

As well as shattered glass on the road, firefighters were tasked with removing the loose debris and windows.

A Scottish Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) spokesperson said: "Operations Control mobilised three fire engines and an aerial appliance to the scene, where two casualties were assisted to safety and passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

"Residents were also evacuated from nearby properties as a precaution.

"SFRS crews have now left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe."

Staff from Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) were also sent to help affected residents.

GHA managing director Jennifer Russell said: "People were allowed back in shortly after the incident but we'll continue to support them with anything they need.

"We're also working closely with the police and fire services."
