A call centre in Glasgow has been earmarked for closure, with 406 jobs at risk.

Centrica - the company that runs Scottish Gas and British Gas - is proposing to close its City Park office.

Sarwjit Sambhi, CEO Centrica Consumer, said: "This difficult decision was made because we need to respond to the growing challenges we face.

"Our customers want more from us. Competition is fierce and we're operating under a price cap."

The company is proposing to make the cuts as part of its transformation programme.

It intends to maintain its commitment to Scotland through offices in Edinburgh and Uddingston, South Lanarkshire.

A total of 406 employees are now entering a period of consultation for proposed redundancy.

A small number of roles from the Glasgow office may be moved to the Uddingston office.

Centrica stated that its priority now "is to support all those potentially effected and ensure a fair and transparent consultation process".

Union leaders at Unison said they wanted to ensure there were no compulsory redundancies.

National energy officer Matt Lay said: "Any loss of jobs is disappointing and staff will understandably feel anxious.

"We'll be working closely with British Gas to ensure no compulsory redundancies and affected employees will be able to move to other local sites, receive training to take on new roles or take advantage of the voluntary severance scheme."

Janet Stewart, Unison regional organiser, added: "It's really disappointing that City Park is going to be closing.

"We've known for some time that there was going to be redundancies within British Gas, but the whole place closing is really disappointing.

"And obviously we've got a lot of upset members inside today.

"They're very uneasy about what's going to happen."

Hazel Nolan, GMB Scotland organiser, said: "Obviously we're devastated on behalf of our members - those who are losing their jobs today, and also very concerned on behalf of the rest of our members across the business who'll be watching these job cuts happening and wondering why and if there's going to be further job cuts made in the future."

Glasgow councillor Allan Casey told STV News that Centrica was a valued employer in the East End of the city.

He said: "I am extremely disappointed to hear that 406 jobs are being threatened at Centrica in City Park.

"I hope that all parties can come together to ensure this does not go ahead.

"Centrica are a valued employer in Dennistoun and it would be a huge loss to the local area.

"I hope all options can be explored before we risk the workers' employment."
