A prisoner who stabbed a fellow inmate with a sharpened toothbrush has been jailed for 13 months.

Craig McFall, 33, pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to stabbing Derek McCurly with a homemade weapon in the exercise yard at HMP Low Moss, Bishopbriggs, in July 2017.

McFall's lawyer Kenny McGowan said the two men did not get on.

He added: "They should have been kept separate at all times as they didn't get on, they were put in the same yard at the same time."

McFall's weapon, which was made from a plastic toothbrush, was not stopped when he went through metal detector at the entrance to the yard.

Prosecutor Lauren Saunton said: "Two prison officers saw Mr McFall and Mr McCurly arguing. This became physical and the accused stabbed the victim several times."

McFall threw the sharpened nine-inch weapon onto the grass and it was recovered by prison guards.

Mr McCurly was treated by medical staff for injuries to his scalp and elbow, but didn't require hospital supervision.

Mr McGowan said: "The prison officers observed the two men fighting but Mr McFall accepts what he did to Mr McCurly."

McFall has previous convictions for violence.

Sheriff John McCormick told McFall: "You took a sharpened toothbrush into the yard.

"You took such weapon and used it in such a location.

"I have to view this as very serious and there is no option but a custodial sentence."
