A pensioner has died after crashing into the back of a car on the A8.

The 87-year-old man smashed his Ford Fiesa into the back of a Volkswagen Touran near the Newark Castle roundabout at Port Glasgow, Inverclyde.

The impact caused the Volkswagen to crash into the back of a red Jaguar X-Type.

Emergency services attended and the pensioner was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and passenger of the Volkswagen Touran, two women aged 45 and 75, were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The 75-year-old remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A 59-year-old man and a woman, 58, who were in the Jaguar X-Type, were uninjured.

Police closed the road for almost six hours while investigations were carried out.

Sergeant Kenny Malaney said: "We are trying to establish exactly what happened here and would appeal to anyone who was driving on the A8 near to Newark Castle immediately prior to, or at the time of the incident, who may have information that could help us to contact us.

"We would also ask anyone with dash-cam footage to look back, it may be able to assist us. We urge you to come forward."
