Former rubbish dump to be transformed into £1m park
Footpaths, garden areas and a mountain bike track approved for East Kilbride site.
A former landfill site in East Kilbride is to be transformed into a new £1m park.
The 7.6-hectare Glen Esk will get new footpaths, a mountain bike track, garden areas and outdoor art work.
South Lanarkshire Council - which owns the site - said it wanted to encourage residents to walk and cycle.
The project will be funded via support from Scottish Government Vacant and Derelict Land Fund.
Council planning officer Tina Miekle said: "Part of the site was previously used for landfill purposes.
"No objections were received from consultees. We are satisfied any concerns have been addressed. It is a high-quality greenspace."
The site sits north of existing homes and the former St Leonard's Primary School - which is currently being redeveloped for residential purposes.
