Warnings over further flooding have been issued as the clean-up begins in parts of Scotland worst affected by the recent torrential rain.

Inverclyde and parts of west central Scotland were hit with the deluge on Thursday night as around 20mm of rain fell.

In Greenock, several streets in the town centre were affected by the torrential rain, while the area was also hit by lightning in the thundery showers.

The Oak Mall Shopping Centre remained closed on Friday after being hit by a flash flood on Thursday evening.

Alastair Coulson, asset manager for the centre, said: "We are pretty confident what has come in is clear water during the flash flood.

"However, health and safety of members of the public is of paramount importance to us and we’ve got environmental specialists accessing the impact of the flood in just now.

"There has not substantial damage caused to the centre and we’re trying to ascertain what has come into the centre from an environmental perspective. The clean-up operation is very much under way here and we’re also trying to establish why this happened. We hope to be open again as soon as possible."

Several shops and homes around the Nelson Street area of the town were flooded during the downpour on Thursday.

In Glasgow, the recently revamped Commonwealth Games venue the Tollcross International Swimming Centre was forced to close on Thursday night amid the downpour. It reopened to users on Friday morning.

On Friday, the Met Office issued yellow "be aware" warnings for Highlands and Islands, Grampian, Strathclyde, Central, Tayside, Fife, South West Scotland, Lothians and Borders. They said there is a "widespread risk of heavy downpours" across the country with up to 30mm of rain in some places.

STV weatherman Sean Batty said: "The weather situation in the UK isn’t going to change much in the next 24 hours. Low pressure centred to the south west of Ireland is pulling in moist air from the Atlantic along with warm air from Iberia.

"This combination has given rise to the heavy thundery showers seen in the last few days and more of the same can be expected during Friday and Saturday."

Mr Batty added: "The main concentration of heavy showers on Friday look as though they will be around the Highland and Grampian regions along with parts of the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway. During Saturday showers are expected widely through the first part of the day, again some of these have the potential to lead to flooding. However, across southern and central Scotland the showers should become more isolated in the afternoon.

"Northern parts of Scotland will hang on to these heavy showers until the evening. Showers will be replaced by heavy rainfall on Sunday, which will be placed across central and southern Scotland on Sunday morning, spreading into northern areas during the day. Into next week, with a similar sort of flow, we can expect a return to sunshine and thundery showers."

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has flood alerts in place for Ayrshire and Arran, Central, Dumfries and Galloway, Edinburgh and Lothians, Borders, Tayside and West Central Scotland.
