A masked gang used sledgehammers in a raid on a series of jewellers shops in Glasgow.

The robbery was carried out by what police describe as a group of four men at the Argyll Arcade in the city centre on Wednesday at around 12.50pm.

The robbers were seen running from the shopping area behind a cloud of smoke and carrying hammers.

Police confirmed that four jewellers shops, Mappin and Webb, Rox, Lewis Grant and Laings of Glasgow were targeted during the raid.

The gang only managed to enter Rox jewellers and grabbed a small quantity of items before running off.

STV News understands a number of expensive Hublot watches were stolen.

One member of staff, thought to be a concierge, suffered a leg injury during the raid.

One of the robbers is heard in video footage of the raid apparently saying: "Out the way or I will kill you all."

Police say that they believe the four men fled in a white hatchback car. A white Volkswagon Golf was later recovered in St James Road in the Townhead area of Glasgow and detectives are trying to establish if it is the vehicle involved.

The gang are caught on camera carrying a range of weapons from sledgehammers to axes as well as holdall bags.

Members of the public are seen looking on as the drama unfolds.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "We can confirm police are responding to reports of an armed robbery at Argyll Arcade in Glasgow city centre.

"We received a call around 12.20pm. Inquiries are ongoing."

In September last year, a thief stole with a watch and ring worth over £10,000 at Rox Jewellers in Glasgow’s Argyll Arcade.

He stole the items worth a five-figure sum and was chased by a security guard into Buchanan Street before he was lost in the King Street car park area near St Enoch Shopping Centre.
