His relatives have been contacted and a full report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
Detective Chief Inspector Jim King who is in charge of the investigation said: "A post mortem examination will take place later today however we are treating his death as murder.
"A full investigation has been ongoing since Mr Costello was attacked on Sunday night. We believe that a number of males were involved and we would urge any person who has not yet been spoken to by police to come forward.
"This was a cowardly attack on an innocent man who was heading home after a night out with his friend. There seems to be no clear motive of why he was assaulted."
Police are asking anyone who saw the disturbance to contact them.
