Celtic v Rapid Vienna in 1984: bottle throwing and replays

Celtic and Rapid Vienna’s meeting in the Europa League has stirred-up memories of some of the nastier nights in football’s history.

The Austrians have had to defend their decision to wear the same strip they donned for the controversial Old Trafford match, while fans of both clubs have been trading online insults ahead of the match on Thursday.

The bad blood stems from the three legs the clubs played in their 1984 European Cup Winners Cup clash. The second leg, which Celtic won 3-0, was chalked off after Vienna claimed a player had been hit by a bottle from the stands. Rapid went on to pinch the tie at Old Trafford.

This is the footage of the match, showing the keeper’s battle with Tommy Burns and the bottle landing yards from the player after he dropped to the ground.

Brian McClair had opened up the scoring as Celtic chased a 3-1 deficit from the first leg. The pressure was all with the home side’s and Celtic looked set for another glory night as Murdo MacLeod added another before half time.

The third goal came from Burns, who slid into the Vienna keeper with his studs up to nick the ball and pass into the empty net.

The keeper was quick to get his revenge: when Burns chased another ball into the box the keeper caught the ball before launching his studs into the Celtic legend’s guts; the Jean Claude van Damme style challenge which would now no doubt earn him a ban from the game, just as Burns’ sliding challenge would land him in hot water.

The Austrian side resorted to foul play to try to disrupt the match as the referee considered his response. Defender Rudolf Weinhofer fell to the ground claiming he had been hit by a bottle thrown from by Celtic fans.

Replays showed that nothing had hit the player, but Rapid appealed to UEFA, and won a replay. The Parkhead side were fined £17,000 and ordered to play their next home European game behind closed doors.

Celtic lost the replay at Old Trafford 1-0 in a match marred by crowd trouble. The Glaswegian fans erupted into violence, targeting the Austrian players. The keeper was targeted in his goals and another Rapid player took a kick to the groin as the teams were escorted off the pitch at full time.
