Scotland fail to reach play-offs after draw in Slovenia
A 2-2 draw ended the national team's hopes of reaching World Cup 2018.
Scotland's hopes of reaching the World Cup qualifying play-offs have ended with a 2-2 draw with Slovenia in Ljubljana.
A win in the final group game would have guaranteed the national team a two-legged tie with a place at Russia 2018 awaiting the victor but Gordon Strachan's side fell at the last hurdle despite holding a lead at half-time.
Scotland had gone in front after a clinical Leigh Griffiths finish but Slovenia came out fighting in the second half and equalised through Roman Bezjak, who headed home from a set-piece.
Bezjak then gave his side the lead after 72 minutes, stroking the ball through a group of players in the box.
Scotland looked down and out but regained faint hope when Robert Snodgrass made it 2-2 with a deft finish as just two minutes remained on the clock. Slovenia's Bostjan Cesar was sent off as Scotland looked for a late winner.
No third goal came and Slovakia's win against Malta saw them leapfrog Scotland into second spot and the nation's long wait to reach a major finals continue.
