The wait for Scotland to return to a major championships goes on after the national team fell short of reaching the World Cup play-offs.
A win against Slovenia would have put Gordon Strachan's side in the draw but despite taking the lead through Leigh Griffiths, it all slipped away.
Slovenia came out fighting in the second half and equalised through Roman Bezjak, who headed home from a set-piece.
Bezjak then gave his side the lead after 72 minutes, stroking the ball through a group of players in the box.
Scotland looked down and out but regained faint hope when Robert Snodgrass made it 2-2 with a deft finish as just two minutes remained on the clock.
Slovenia's Bostjan Cesar was sent off as Scotland looked for a late winner.
