Rangers complete clean sweep at PFA awards
Ibrox club take manager, player and young player awards at PFA Scotland awards dinner.
Rangers took a hat-trick of trophies at the PFA Scotland awards dinner on Sunday night following their SPL title win. Steven Davis was named player of the year with the award being voted for by his fellow professionals.
The Northern Ireland midfielder celebrated his success alongside teenage defender Danny Wilson, who scooped the young player of the year award, and Walter Smith, who was crowned as manager of the year.
Davis, who has made 48 appearances for Rangers this season, scoring four times, was voted as best SPL player ahead of team-mates Kris Boyd and David Weir, as well as Andy Webster who is at Dundee United on loan from Rangers.
Rangers defender Wilson took the young players award after an impressive breakthrough season in which the teenage centre-back has slotted in effectively next to veteran Weir and Madjid Bougherra. He beat strikers Anthony Stokes of Hibernian, David Goodwillie of Dundee United and Dundee’s Leigh Griffiths to the prize.
Walter Smith added the PFA manager of the year award to the Scottish Football Writers’ Association award he had already collected this season. The Ibrox manager collected the prize ahead of St Johnstone’s Derek McInnes and Ross County’s Derek Adams.
Smith revealed afterwards he had personally voted for his former player McInnes, who had enjoyed a successful first season in the SPL.
"It's nice that other managers vote for you in this one," the Rangers manager said.
"I think he's done an exceptional job at St Johnstone, just coming into the division. It's good to see somebody I had as a player come on."
Smith also paid tribute to the backroom staff who had helped throughout what had been a testing campaign. "You need a wee bit of inspiration and a wee bit of prompting and they've supplied me with that over the last three years," he said.
