Jackie McNamara says Rangers face competition to sign Jon Daly
The Dundee United skipper is a pre-contract target for the Ibrox side.
Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara says he isn’t surprised Rangers are interested in signing captain Jon Daly but claims they face competition for his services.
The 30-year-old is out of contract at Tannadice and the Ibrox club have targeted the Irishman on a pre-contract deal.
Daly has scored 70 goals in 194 games for the Terrors since joining from Hartlepool in January 2007.
When asked about Rangers’ interest in the striker, McNamara told STV: “I don’t think it is a surprise. I think Jon has been a great player for Dundee United in his time here.
“I think it's credit to him that he's highly sought after and I'm not surprised, it's not just Rangers.
“He’s our captain and he’s here until the end of the season at least and hopefully he’ll continue to do good work for us.”
McNamara says he has spoken briefly with the forward over a new contract but added he wouldn’t stand in any player’s way if they wanted to move on.
He said: “I’d say to most of the players at any stage of their career to look after themselves. It’s important the decision they make in their football life is the right one for them.
“If it is with us great, if not then it is part and parcel of football.”
