Dunfermline manager Jim Jefferies has begun planning for next season by courting his former striker at Hearts and Kilmarnock Kevin Kyle.

The Pars boss has also run the rule over two youngsters who have recently been released from English clubs as his preparations for life in or out of the SPL take shape.

Jefferies told the Daily Record: “We’ve already had a look at some players who were recommended to us and the best way to judge them is in bounce games.

“There’s no point standing still, we must improve the squad. If we stay in the SPL we must make sure we’re not in this position next season.

“If we’re relegated we want to come straight back up. The work starts now, not at the end of the season.”

Kyle, who left Hearts earlier this year after 12 months out with a chronic hip problem, is battling to resurrect his career after successfully going under the knife to ease the pain.

The 6ft 3in frontman has the option to do pre-season back with Paulo Sergio’s team after the season ends, but the Scotland capped striker admits he has not been short of offers since walking away from Tynecastle, with his old boss Jefferies among those pledging to help him build up his fitness.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Kyle said: “Jim has been a great support and he’s been on the phone offering help. He said if I can get myself back into condition to play again then I shouldn’t forget about him.

“I had a great time under Jim at Killie. I was good for him and he was good for me as he helped me win a move to Hearts. It’s not about the money as I just want to get back playing again.

“I’m getting married in June and don’t want a club too far away so Dunfermline would be ideal. I’ve had no shortage of offers and I’m just working on my fitness.”
