Accies release nine first team players
Hamilton Accies send nine players packing as the club prepares to cope with relegation to the Irn-Bru First Division
After the disappointment of being consigned to relegation, Billy Reid’s Hamilton Accies side have cut their cloth accordingly, by releasing nine members of the first team squad.
David Buchanan, Gary McDonald, David Elebert, Gavin Skelton and Andy Graham are some of the more recognisable names to leave New Douglas Park, after featuring heavily for Accies this season.
Mark Carrington, Tom Elliot and substitute goalkeeper Sean Murdoch will also leave for pastures new after the Lanarkshire outfit’s final SPL encounter against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Grant Evans departs after spending the season on loan at Morton, while James Gibson is widely expected to retire after suffering his third serious knee injury in as many years.
Accies had suffered a dismal season, but looked as though a near impossible survival bid was on the cards after recording two wins over Hibernian, a win over St Mirren, and a draw at home to Aberdeen.
However, Tuesday night’s defeat by a single goal against St Johnstone was enough to ensure that Billy Reid’s men will be playing their football in the Irn-Bru First Division.
A statement on the club's official website, www.acciesfc.co.uk, read: "The club extends its grateful thanks to all of them for their service to Accies, be it a few months in some cases, or eight years in the case of Grant Evans, who arrived as a 13-year-old youth in June 2003.”
"Elebert, Gibson, Murdoch and Taylor had all been a part of the promotion team from three years ago.”
"All of them leave with our very best wishes for wherever they end up in the future."
Coach Stuart Taylor and sports science coach Ross Hughes will also leave New Douglas Park, as the club prepare to operate out with Scotland’s elite division.
