Last-gasp Hearts sink Kilmarnock 3-2 after dramatic turn around
Sam Nicholson struck Hearts' third goal in less than 20 minutes to seal their comeback.
Hearts came from a goal behind with a minute left to snatch an incredible 3-2 League Cup victory at Kilmarnock.
Juanma Delgado headed an equaliser with the clock hitting 89 minutes before Sam Nicholson fired a winner from eight yards deep inside injury-time.
Josh Magennis looked to have sent Killie through with a double either side of Alim Ozturk's strike but there was a late sting in the tail to sicken Killie boss Gary Locke and the rest of the former Hearts contingent at Rugby Park.
Emergency loan signing Mark Ridgers also tasted defeat against his former club after signing on Tuesday with another former Hearts goalkeeper, Jamie MacDonald, injured and Conor Brennan cup-tied, although the former was fit enough to make the bench.
The former Tynecastle contingent also included Conrad Balatoni, Jamie Hamill and Scott Robinson on the park with several more unavailable or left out. Killie were also without Rory McKenzie and Darryl Westlake because of ankle injuries but they built on two successive wins with a 13th-minute goal.
Greg Kiltie was the provider, showing good skill to work space following Mark O'Hara's pass before delivering a tempting cross which Magennis attacked well to head into the corner of the net.
The hosts suffered another injury blow when Stuart Findlay was carried off on a stretcher after appearing in some distress following a heavy landing near the halfway line.
Hearts gradually came into the game and Sam Nicholson saw one effort held by Ridgers before firing just over from 20 yards while Morgaro Gomis had a shot comfortably saved.
Hearts brought on Jamie Walker and Delgado at half-time and created the first chance of the half when Prince Buaben released Osman Sow, but the big striker blazed high and wide.
Magennis had a 20-yard shot saved but Hearts continued to press and Ridgers saved well from Delgado at the near post before he was beaten by Ozturk on 74 minutes. The defender beat his marker to the ball after Nicholson's corner broke to the edge of the box and hit a shot that curled into the far corner through a crowded goalmouth.
Magennis restored Killie's lead five minutes later when he collected Kallum Higginbotham's pass 18 yards out, held off his man and turned and fired into the bottom corner.
But Walker crossed for Delgado to power home before Nicholson finished into the corner to book Hearts a quarter-final place.
