Fifteen for '15: All-action midfielder Scott Martin is climbing Hibs' ranks

In our look at the brightest talents for the year ahead, we look to Hibernian's academy.

He’s an “all-action” midfielder who has already caught the eye of the manager of Hibernian.

But Scott Martin was close to being left on the dreaded scrapheap when he was released by Celtic as a 13-year-old.

The 17-year-old Glaswegian was unsure what the future held for him after leaving the Hoops but an email from his mum to Hibs led to a trial, youth deal and then academy contract at the capital club’s East Mains base.

And after making his debut in the green and white of Hibs this season, Martin looks ready to take the next steps on his journey in football.

A rounded central midfielder, Martin can mix it in the physical side of the game but plays with his head up and looking to make passes which hurt the opposition.

That has not just impressed Alan Stubbs, but also the national selectors, who have handed him caps at Under-17 and Under-19 level for Scotland.

With a work rate on the training field to match his energetic performances, Hibs fans can expect to see more of the teenager over the coming year.

What his coach says

Joe McBride: “He’s a winner, he lives to win and he backs it up with his performances.

“He managed to get on the pitch for a couple of minutes against Falkirk which was great for him – but he’s on the bottom rung of the ladder right now and he needs to work to get where he wants to be.

“He has all the tools to do that. He’s an all-action player – with the ball at his feet and in the tackle.

“We want him to be a midfielder who can go out and do a bit of everything.

“I say to all the Under-20 players that Alan Stubbs comes to a lot of our games and they need to use it as a window to impress him.

“I want to them to have the manager going away thinking about them and Scott has made that impression.”
