Darren Barr's presence will help youngsters says Kilmarnock manager
Allan Johnston says he plans to use the former Hearts player in defence at Rugby Park.
Allan Johnston says new signing Darren Barr will help Kilmarnock's young players mature this season after making the former Hearts man his first signing since taking charge at Rugby Park.
The 28-year-old has agreed a one-year deal with the Ayrshire side after impressing on trial.
Capped by Scotland in 2008, Barr spent six years with Falkirk before making the switch to Hearts in 2010.
He helped the Edinburgh side win the Scottish Cup in 2012, scoring in the final against Hibernian and Johnston is delighted to have him on board.
Speaking to STV, Johnston said: "It is an exciting signing for us. He’s got loads of experience and that’s just what we need to balance with the youth we have at the club.
"I am sure the addition of Darren will help them come along and mature as players. His experience in SPL will be invaluable. Hearts’ loss is very much our gain.
"I intend to use him at centre back this season, although we are aware he is quite versatile.
"He could play as a defensive midfielder but my aim is to use him as a defender."
